Shep On Fishing: Ocean temps dipping into 50s, but offshore action remains excellent

The weather gets hot, and the water along the coast gets cold.

That's a rare combination for mid-July.

Despite the contrast in conditions that caused thick fog along the beaches, fishing stayed pretty much constant. The water temps dropped down to the mid-50s in some areas.

Offshore fishing is excellent. The Elephant Trunk and Lobster Claw join the list that includes 19-Fathom Lump, Massey Canyon, Hot Dog and Hambone for big-game fish. Generally, it's been yellowfin tuna farther offshore and bluefin tuna in closer. More

Shep on Fishing: King, Roesch win Sunshine Foundation tournament

The Sunshine Foundation Tournament, now in its 11th year, attracted a big fleet of 237 boats Saturday in the Great Bay area. Tom Paxton at Great Bay Marina, the tournament headquarters, estimated the contest raised $30,000 for the Sunshine Foundation, which fulfills the dreams of seriously ill and physically challenged children.
