ATLANTIC CITY — Billy Kovatch hit a game-winning RBI single as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the New Jersey Jackals 2-1 in front of an announced crowd of 1,311 fans at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Sunday Night.
After reaching second base on a single, followed by an Eddie Kim walk, Gil Zayas rounded third on Kovatch’s line drive to left. Jackals (23-20) left fielder Andrew Larsen’s throw home was not in time as Zayas crossed the plate safely to secure the victory.
“I saw a fastball right down the middle and just went with it,” Kovatch said. “I was just trying to move the runners or score them.”
Kovatch was the Surf’s only player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3.
The Jackals got on the board first in the fourth inning when Juan Tejeda scored on a single by Vic Davilla after reaching base on a walk. That would prove to be all the offense New Jersey could muster as Atlantic City held the Jackals scoreless the rest of the game.
The Surf (22-21) tied the game in the fifth inning when Eddie Kim scored from third base on a strikeout-wild pitch. Kim reached base on a single and then advanced to third on a single by Kovatch and a fielder’s choice ground ball by Brad Thoma.
Surf starter Adam Cox (4-2) had another big night with 11 strikeouts over eight innings. He allowed one run on five hits.
“I’m just going out there and throwing my best stuff and trying to get it by them,” Cox said. “We finally got to see what a walk-off felt like tonight.”
Reliever Kyle George (3-1) picked up the win for the Surf, striking out one and allowing one hit in the ninth.
Atlantic City shined defensively as well as Burke made a leaping catch in left field on a fly ball by Zack Smithlin and Josh Burrus made a running catch on a line drive to right field by Davilla in the top of the ninth.
“This is a good momentum shift for us,” Kovatch said. “This is definitely how we want to end our series heading onto the road.”
