A story in Thursday's Press misidentified three players on the Brigantine 13-14 Junior League softball team. Maureen Hannan pitched a complete game, striking out six in a 20-9 win over Somers Point on Sunday. Dana DiStefano had three hits. Maria Caccavo had a grand slam.

HAMMONTON - You rarely expect the ninth batter in the lineup to be a power hitter, but left fielder Tyler Wray's three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning gave Linwood a 6-3 lead over Stafford American and secured the District 16 Little League title on Thursday.

OCEAN CITY — Most of the crowd at Carey Stadium expected the ever-attacking Ocean City Barons soccer team to tie the game and then maybe win Sunday in the second half against the underdog Hampton Roads (Va.) Piranhas.
But every offensive thrust by the Barons failed or got turned away by the visitors, and Hampton Roads held on to win 2-1.
The Barons dropped to 5-3-5 on the season, and they’re in fourth place in the USL Premier Development League’s Eastern Conference Northeast Division. Hampton Roads improved to 5-6-2 in the Eastern Conference Mid-Atlantic Division.
A lot of credit goes to the Piranhas’ defense, which withstood the Barons after Hampton Roads surprised the home team with two goals late in the first half.
One of the Piranhas’ defensive leaders was Ollie Lutton, a native of London, England, and a senior for the Old Dominion University soccer team.
“Ocean City started off really well, but after 15 minutes we adjusted,” Lutton said. “We managed to bag two, and then we battled to hold the lead.”
Early in the game, it looked like an easy night for the Barons, who are still hoping for a wild-card playoff spot. Ocean City midfielder Jeremy Ortiz took a lead pass from Lee Squires in the fifth minute of play and blasted a goal from the right side at the 18-yard line.
The 1-0 lead appeared to be the first of many more as O.C. had several more big chances that came close. After three saves in the middle of the half by Piranhas goalie Andrew Techanchuk and another by Hampton Roads defender Steve Danbusky, the game quickly turned.
A shot from outside the 18 by the Piranhas went off Ocean City goalie Dylan Lawrence in the 31st minute. Hampton Roads midfielder Roberto Segueglia teed up the rebound right in front and booted it past Lawrence to tie it at 1-1.
The winning goal came on a penalty kick by forward Tom Woolard in the 42nd minute. The shot was called after Barons defender Jimmy Davis took down Segueglia in the box. On the penalty kick, Lawrence dove to Woolard’s left and the shot went off the O.C. goalie’s feet into the goal for a 2-1 Piranhas lead.
“Ocean City absolutely killed us in the first 15 minutes, and could have been up 3-0,” Hampton Roads coach Jon Hall said. “We know that (head coach) Mike (Pellegrino) has a good attacking team. We made a few adjustments and started attacking too. When we got up 2-1, we knew Ocean City would throw everything but the kitchen sink at us in the second half. Ocean City was attacking but we were able to keep them from scoring. We’re very happy to get the win, and they must be disappointed.”
“Missed opportunities has been the story of our season,” Pellegrino said. “We had a lot of opportunities and creative offense tonight and couldn’t finish.
“We’re in a tough division. We’ll have to win out, and hope some of the other teams beat each other. It’s not over yet.”
