MAYS LANDING – A Malaga man who pleaded guilty in March to one count of Sexual Assault and one count of Luring two girls with the purpose of sexually arousing or gratifying himself was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel announced.

Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury Jr. sentenced Thomas Lera, 43, of Cumberland County, to the term for sexual assault. Lera also must serve seven years to run concurrent on the luring count, Assistant Prosecutor Pamela D’Arcy, who represented the state, said.

“Mr. Lera acknowledges he has a problems with compulsive behavior. But acknowledging a problem does not absolve him from the ramifications of his behavior,” D’Arcy said at sentencing. “He needs to understand that his actions have had a significant negative impact on the children of this county.”

The defendant must serve 85 percent of his prison term before parole eligibility. He is also subject to Megan’s Law registration and community supervision for life, D’Arcy explained. More
