Megan's Law

New Jersey was the first state to adopt Megan's Law, named for Megan Kanka, a 7-year-old girl who was killed in 1994 by a sex offender living in her Hamilton Township, Mercer County neighborhood.

The law established a Sex Offender Internet Registry. It also requires notification of local law enforcement whenever convicted sex offenders move, whether into or within the community. More
