Stockton to help test polling process

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - As gas prices rise, area residents are being bombarded with proposals for offshore wind farms, solar-powered schools and hybrid cars.

But how much does the public really know about alternative energy, and how are they forming opinions of its value?

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will attempt to find out as one of 15 colleges nationwide chosen to participate in a polling project that both educates and questions participants on major issues.

Called deliberative polling, the process involves surveying a group of people on a topic, then taking a sample of that group and providing them with more information on the topic. That sample is then re-polled using the same survey to see if learning more about a topic changes their opinions. The results of the entire process are then publicized to give the public and policy-makers a more in-depth view of public opinion. More
