It's six o'clock. The sun has started its lazy decent into the west and the beaches of Surf City are slowly emptying.

But all is not quiet at the 5th Street beach, where a crowd has started to gather.

Lifeguard pickup trucks bearing the insignias of the towns they guard pull up onto the beach towing rowboats and other equipment. Lifeguards fresh off their stands stumble out. Some are dressed as spectators in sweatshirts and t-shirts, while others don bathing caps and have numbers inked on their forearms.

They are gathering for a lifeguard race, one of many that take place every summer at the southern New Jersey shore. More
